Track Prep
By Dave Rosenblum
Track days are a great way to get to the track and spend little money, where as one would need to if they owned a race car, race trailer, crew, wheels , tires, etc.
Here is a little prep work, one would need to do to have a fun day at the track. The internet has great in car views of a race track. Do a lap on the web to get familiar with the track you are going to have fun on.
Safety equipment recommended:
- good snell safety approved helmet
- good pair driving gloves
- wear long sleeve and long pants is always recommended
- good seat harness or seat belts,
- driving suit is great , but not required.
Tools recommended:
- torque wrench and socket for wheel studs
- tire pressure gauge
- small set of tools
- jack and jack stands
- work gloves when working around hot parts
- clipboard and stop watch
- plastic gas can
- water jug
- folding chair to relax
Car prep:
- check fluids
- check tire pressure, and make sure tires are in good shape,
- check wheel bearings by lifting car and seeing if there is play on your wheels,
- check the torque on your wheel studs to make sure they are tight and not over torque
- check and see exhaust is not hanging and secure
- do a nut and bolt check on suspension pieces so nothing is loose
- do a look around and under to make sure everything is safe and secure
If your car is in good shape it shouldn't take more than an hour or two to check everything out. Knowing, that you will have a safe outing and not have any failures to take the fun out of your day!
I've been doing this for over 45 years and I am here in one piece. A little prep goes a long way for having fun!
See you at the track!
